The Queen gave gay love Royal Assent today,
The bells rang out provoking hype and spin
Some hundred years too late for Oscar Wilde
Enlightened Age defaulted on its name,
With Rulers who diversity detest,
Yet Queen gave gay love Royal Assent today.
Gay men and women, others of less fame
Embrace your freedoms, love and every whim
Some hundred years too late for Oscar Wilde.
He would have coined an epigram with zest
For Queers of England gathered now to sing
When Queen gave gay love Royal Assent today.
No more will church or law invade love’s nest.
NOH8. Update! Equate like person’s skin…
Some hundred years too late for Oscar Wilde.
In Rue des Beaux-Arts papered walls shared jest
As curtains closed on exiled convict’s sin.
The Queen gave gay love Royal Assent today,
Mere hundred years too late for Oscar Wilde.
Excellent, superb poem, loved this. Best wishes from Baldy 🙂
Thanks for this affirmation Baldy – while the occasion marked a positive new future, I felt it timely to also highlight the inequities of the past.
great stuff 🙂
i’ve nominated you for an award 🙂

Thanks again EightLeggedGemini

I admire anyone who can make a villanelle work! 🙂
You are kind to say so but think of it as just a template Hollyanne – blogger T.J.makes it even easier here http://tjtherien.wordpress.com/2013/07/22/a-foundation-for-form-how-i-break-down-a-villanelle-for-the-purpose-of-writing-one/
We need to acknowledge and make allowance for the Queen’s age and stage in life I guess. And I suppose we need to respect her freedom to seek advice.
Shakti
Absolutely Shakti. The issue isn’t really about the Queen at all – it’s about the people. Thanks for commenting.
I’m surprised it took her so long. The queen’s usually so up-to-date and in step with public consensus and not an expensive anachronism left over from Britain’s imperial past at all.
A nice little old lady Brian – who does what she’s told by David Cameron 😀
Beauty in words.
Thank you for this affirmation (which I will share with Oscar).
Nice Mike, very evocative and a nice refrain to Wilde’s ballad. I like your new theme too – much more of an impact!
Thanks on both counts Dara. I’m still looking for a theme that makes writing easier though 😛
very well crafted… I tip my hat… well done… Excellent Villanelle
Your template prompted this so half the credit/blame is on you 😀
I’ll accept the blame… you take the credit… how does that sound…
Here’s the other one I mentioned earlier http://michaelmcguire.com.au/2011/10/12/viannelle-pour-google/ Send me the link to your other Villenelles.
I’ve only written 2 and they are both on my blog in the drop down menu under Villanelle… you saw the one… the other is a Hockey Poem…
I never knew Oscar was gay.
There’s a good historical synopsis here Claudette –

Too late for Alan Turing too! Great Villanelle, with the refrain really kicking throughout. (Sorry, brain not totally awake today, so “kicking” had to do…you know what I mean).
You’re coming through loud and clear – all the more reason for me to appreciate your taking the time to swing by with a good word. Many thanks. Kick on…
