The View From My Age

The view from my age expands with every year
Though the horizon pretends no variation now;
The years disclose paler patchwork fields
Yet prudent stalks wield rich and finer yields;
The slender trees though frangible and spindly
Weigh less fruit but of rare and savored fare;
Rocks once rough eroded now and smoothed
Regale with narrative their storied strata bared;
The undulating contours and aquiline relief
Wear wrinkles sculpting countenance of character.
Iโ€™m more drawn to the towering back-lit peaks
Than to the gloomy gorges dipped in shade.

    • With one’s chin up it’s impossible to miss them Jane. Thank you for drawing the focus to the clue the narrator gave the reader for ageing contentedly.

    • Thanks e-T, your words reward the lexicographic exhumations I had to shovel my way through to unearth some of them! Your kind words are greatly appreciated.

    You’ve created a beautiful painting with words that I can sit and reflect upon all day. Plus, I recognize that view as I, too, am drawn in similar directions as I age. Thank you.

    • You’re very kind to say so AC and I laud your recognition of the terrain because it is indeed the optimal place to be to maximize the vista. My sincere appreciation for your words.

    • Hey Sabica, I’m not THAT old! ๐Ÿ˜€ (but I certainly feel that way sometimes). And I so happy with your reaction to this piece – I promise you that this feeling of serenity does indeed increase as one matures. Thank you so much for your lovely comment.

  2. Mike !, Such a great poem … I love the way you described the aging process as being related with natural landscapes and their surroundings.
    The parallelisms work perfectly here!. Thanks for sharing. All the best to you, Aquileana ๐Ÿ˜€
